This contest is free and open to all students grades K-12 in public, private, charter, home, and parochial schools of the Brazos Valley. The intent is to provide all students with an opportunity to learn about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his message and his work. To give students an opportunity to reflect on our present and the future. To demonstrate an understanding of civil rights work; and encourage continued study through awards and recognition.

THEMES & CRITERIA

K-3rd Grade

How Can I Create Peace & Unity In My Community”

K-1: at least two complete sentences and poster

2-3: at least five complete sentences and poster

K-3 essays and poster can be emailed, uploaded using the Google form, or dropped off at the Brazos Valley African American Museum.

Posters: Use pencils, crayons, paints, markers. Posters must reference theme and be no larger than 12”x18”. Take a picture or scan a copy of entry for electronic submission.

4th12th Grade

Interpret the following, “What would economic or social justice look like if Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lived today?” for grades 4th-12th

All forms of art media are encouraged, no essay required, but an essay can be used as a form of expression. Other examples include poetry, painting, photography/video, & architecture. Must relate to theme, demonstrate an understanding of civil rights work, be creative, and original. Scan or take a picture of work and email it, upload using the Google form, or drop-off entry at the Brazos Valley African American Museum. All entries must provide a description of the work with the conditions below.

4-5: no more than ten complete sentences and art media

6-8: no more than 150 words and art media

9-12: no more than 250 words and art media

**Each entry Must include the Entry Form found on the website or email the following information:

  • The Title for grade category entered
  • Student name, grade, teacher name, school, or organization
  • Parent/guardian name and contact phone number or email for notification

Prizes

Winners will be determined in each category. Cash or gift cards will be awarded.

K-1: First $30, Second $20 Third $15

2-3: First $50, Second $30 Third $25

4-5: First $60, Second $40 Third $30

6-8: First $75, Second $50 Third $30

9-12: First $100, Second $50 Third $30


Announcement

Winners will be announced on Monday, January 15, 2024 during the MLK Program.

Winning entries may be displayed at the Brazos Valley African American Museum.


Publication & Photo Permission

By entering this contest, students and their parents give permission for their photo and entry to be formatted and/ or printed and displayed, as well as to be distributed to the community and media.
